The classical stage production The Butterfly Lovers, headlined by Malaysian doctor-singer JessC, successfully completed its 18th performance in Kuala Lumpur on the 10th. Renowned Hong Kong filmmaker Clifton Ko made a special appearance at the theatre to support the production and later praised the play highly.

Running close to four hours, The Butterfly Lovers stars JessC as Zhu Yingtai, portraying the legendary heroine who disguises herself as a man in pursuit of education and travels to Hangzhou. Along the journey, she meets Liang Shanbo and the two become sworn brothers. After studying together for three years, Liang Shanbo only discovers Zhu Yingtai’s true identity after their separation. Tragically, by the time he arrives at the Zhu residence to propose marriage, Zhu Yingtai has already been promised to the Ma family — unfolding one of Chinese literature’s most heartbreaking love stories on stage.

Since its premiere, the production has consistently sold out. In pursuit of historical authenticity, the production team conducted extensive research into historical documents and references. The large-scale production brought together 34 directors, actors, composers, lyricists, singers, and scriptwriters from the United States, Australia, Taiwan, and Malaysia.

The production also incorporated advanced stage technologies and theatrical techniques, including immersive LED visual backdrops, realistic sound effects, intricate traditional Chinese props, and elegant period costumes. The overall presentation transported audiences into an ancient world, creating the sensation of travelling back in time alongside the performers.

In addition, The Butterfly Lovers incorporated numerous elements of traditional Chinese culture through “play-within-a-play” segments, featuring Sichuan face-changing opera, Peking Opera, and Chinese martial arts performances. American music producer John Lee also specially composed the stage production’s theme song Detour, alongside two insert songs, Encounter and Promise Me.

During the event, Clifton Ko posed for photographs with JessC, Paul Lee, who portrayed Liang Shanbo, and Isaac Cheah, who played Ma Wencai.

Ko praised The Butterfly Lovers as a sincere, emotionally powerful, and exceptionally well-produced theatrical work rich in cultural depth. He remarked that the production beautifully showcased the diversity and richness of Malaysian Chinese culture. From the stage presentation and musical arrangements to the lighting design and visual staging, he described the overall production quality as highly professional and mature.

He also gave special recognition to the cast’s performances, highlighting the emotional depth and nuanced acting delivered by the lead actors, which deeply moved him.

In response to overwhelming audience support, The Butterfly Lovers will return for three additional performances beginning January 31. The production will also continue its charitable mission of raising funds for cancer patients through the JessC Cancer Fund.
