The Dream of Red Mansions Comes to Life — JessC Cast as Lin Daiyu, Global Search Launched for Jia Baoyu

Malaysian singer-actress JessC returns to the stage in a bold new production of The Dream of Red Mansions, taking on the iconic role of Lin Daiyu.

Following the touring success of Moonlight and Music Box, Symphony Theatre (SPAC) unveils this latest project—an unconventional theatrical adaptation of one of China’s most celebrated literary masterpieces.

A Grand Production Blending Veterans and New Talent

This new staging of The Dream of Red Mansions brings together more than 20 performers, combining seasoned actors with fresh faces. In a move that has generated widespread buzz, the production team has launched a global casting campaign titled “Searching for Jia Baoyu”, inviting Chinese male talents aged 18 to 28 to audition for the male lead.

The initiative opens the door for emerging actors worldwide, with the final selection set to determine who will embody one of literature’s most complex and beloved characters.

JessC: From Admirer to Lin Daiyu

A longtime admirer of the novel, JessC described herself as a devoted fan of The Dream of Red Mansions. Taking on the role of Lin Daiyu is both an honor and a challenge she embraces with excitement.

Known for her emotional depth and expressive performance style, JessC is expected to bring a nuanced interpretation to the fragile yet fiercely intelligent heroine—one of the most enduring figures in Chinese literature.

A First for Malaysian Theatre

This production marks the first time The Dream of Red Mansions will be adapted into a large-scale stage performance in Malaysia. Audiences will be transported into the intricate world of the Jia family, experiencing the story’s emotional layers, philosophical depth, and aesthetic beauty through a modern theatrical lens.

Theatre with a Cause

Organized by the Malaysia Naturopathic Association (MNA), the production also serves a charitable mission—raising funds to support cancer patients.
