Presented by Symphony Theatre (SPAC), the stage production The Butterfly Lovers has officially broken a Malaysian record with its extraordinary six-hour runtime, making it the longest stage play ever performed in Malaysia.

The full production was divided into two parts. The first half ran for 3 hours and 15 minutes, while the second half lasted 2 hours and 45 minutes, bringing the entire performance to a total of six hours. After the first act, audiences were given a 75-minute dinner intermission before the continuation of the emotional second half.

The first act focused on the meeting between Liang Shanbo and Zhu Yingtai, their growing friendship, and the memorable three years they spent studying together at the academy. JessC and Paul Lee delivered vibrant and highly engaging performances that kept the audience laughing throughout the show. Many fans were surprised to discover JessC’s unexpectedly comedic and playful side on stage.

As the second half unfolded, the emotional intensity deepened dramatically. Following the famous “Eighteen Miles Farewell” sequence, scenes of separation, heartbreak, and tragedy pushed both the actors and the audience into tears. JessC, together with the cast, broke down emotionally on stage, while many audience members were seen crying openly in the theatre. Some viewers reportedly used up three packs of tissues during the performance, while others even brought towels to wipe away their tears. During several intense scenes involving slaps and whipping, audible gasps could be heard across the auditorium.

To heighten the emotional impact of the production, director Brian Choot specially invited American musician John Lee to compose the theme song Detour, along with the insert songs Encounter and Promise Me. The lyrics were personally written by lead actor Paul Lee, who portrayed Liang Shanbo. In particular, Promise Me, written and composed by Paul Lee himself, beautifully expressed Liang Shanbo’s deepest emotions and inner struggles throughout the story.

The production of The Butterfly Lovers brought together 35 performers from the United States, Australia, Taiwan, and Malaysia in a large-scale international collaboration. The production was also held in partnership with the Malaysia Naturopathic Association (MNA) to raise funds for cancer patients.

Following the overwhelming response, Symphony Theatre (SPAC) has already begun planning additional performances in April.
