The romantic stage play Meant To Be, starring JessC, has exceeded expectations. Originally scheduled for six performances, the production has now added two additional shows following overwhelming audience demand.

Theatre in a Pandemic: Safety Meets Passion

Staged by Symphony Theatre (SPAC) during the COVID-19 period, strict safety measures were implemented throughout the run.

Audiences were required to wear masks at all times, seating was arranged with one-meter physical distancing, and authorities were present to ensure compliance with standard operating procedures (SOPs). Despite these constraints, turnout remained strong—highlighting the public’s eagerness to return to live theatre.

A Cross-Border Creative Force

Adapted from a classic romance novel, Meant To Be is a contemporary love story infused with warmth and emotional depth. The production is directed by Paul Lee, a Taiwanese-American theatre practitioner who not only helms the play but also stars as the male lead and performs the theme song with lyrics he personally wrote.

JessC leads the production as the female protagonist, taking on the role pro bono to raise funds for the JessC Cancer Fund.

A Strong Ensemble Cast

The production features a diverse cast, including:

  • Jeffrey Beh
  • Natalie Chan
  • Caleb Cheah
  • Sophia Koa
  • Lily Lim
  • Timothy Chuah

Together, they deliver a layered and emotionally engaging performance that resonates with audiences.

JessC’s Emotional Breakthrough

Over the course of the two-hour production, JessC fully embodies the innocence, joy, and vulnerability of a young woman in love. Her emotional range peaks in several pivotal scenes where she breaks down in tears on stage, drawing audiences into the story’s most powerful moments.

Director Paul Lee also departs from traditional staging, incorporating unconventional scenes rarely seen in theatre. The result is a production charged with tension, unpredictability, and emotional intensity.

Audience Response: A “Cinematic” Theatre Experience

Following the performances, Meant To Be has received strong public acclaim. Audience members praised its “cinematic” style, noting how the storytelling felt immersive and emotionally accessible—offering a fresh perspective on stage drama.

Many described the experience as eye-opening, with some saying it changed their perception of theatre entirely.

Gratitude Behind the Success

JessC expressed deep appreciation for both her supporters and collaborators:

“This rehearsal period was extremely tight, with very limited time to prepare. But every actor gave their full commitment, memorizing their lines and working together. The theatre team sacrificed a great deal to make this production possible. I’m truly grateful and deeply moved.”

Closing Note

With Meant To Be, JessC and Symphony Theatre demonstrate that even under challenging circumstances, powerful storytelling can thrive. Through emotional authenticity and creative innovation, the production not only entertains—but redefines what modern theatre can be.
