Art meets compassion as Symphony Theatre (SPAC) transforms a literary classic into a force for frontline support.
Amid challenging times, Symphony Theatre (SPAC) continues to champion the spirit of giving by adapting the Chinese literary masterpiece The Dream of Red Mansions into a stage production—and taking it further into the digital space through online streaming. Beyond offering audiences a chance to enjoy a high-caliber performance, the troupe has pledged to donate 100% of ticket proceeds toward pandemic relief supplies for local hospitals facing critical shortages.
Theatre With a Purpose
Driven by a deep commitment to charity, Symphony Theatre hopes the production will inspire audiences not only to appreciate the artistry on stage, but also to contribute to a meaningful cause. By merging culture with compassion, the initiative achieves a dual impact: elevating the arts while directly supporting healthcare efforts.
A Timeless Love Story, Reimagined
Scheduled for online screenings on September 18 and 27, The Dream of Red Mansions is set within the aristocratic Rongguo Mansion and follows the poignant love story between Jia Baoyu and Lin Daiyu.
More than just a romance, the production invites audiences to reflect on life, love, and the fragility of human existence. While Lin Daiyu is often perceived as delicate and melancholic, this interpretation highlights her courage, intelligence, and defiance of societal norms—presenting a more layered and empowering portrayal.
JessC’s Most Demanding Role Yet
JessC once again takes center stage as Lin Daiyu—a role she describes as one of the greatest challenges of her career.
“For me, the hardest part is portraying a teenage girl,” she shared. “It troubled me for quite some time, and I even considered turning it down because of the pressure.”
What ultimately changed her mind was inspiration drawn from veteran actresses such as Liu Xiaoqing, Fung Bo-bo, and Pan Yingzi, who had boldly taken on youthful roles despite their experience. Their courage motivated her to embrace the challenge.
Global Casting & Visual Spectacle
To find the perfect Jia Baoyu, the production team launched a global casting campaign, Searching for Jia Baoyu, which culminated in Terry Lim being selected for the coveted role.
The production is elevated by cutting-edge 3D LED visual backdrops, immersive sound design, and professionally arranged music. Combined with intricately crafted period props and elegant traditional costumes, the show delivers a visually stunning and emotionally rich theatrical experience.
Final Note
In this reimagining of The Dream of Red Mansions, every ticket purchased becomes more than entry to a performance—it becomes a contribution to hope. Through JessC’s emotionally charged portrayal and Symphony Theatre’s dedication to both art and humanity, the production stands as a powerful reminder: even in uncertain times, storytelling can still heal, inspire, and give back.
