After five years of meticulous planning, Symphony Theatre (SPAC) presents what it calls one of its most authentic stage adaptations of The Dream of Red Mansions.
At the heart of the production, JessC leads as the iconic Lin Daiyu, delivering a performance filled with sincerity, emotion, and raw vulnerability—drawing an overwhelmingly emotional response from audiences.
A Three-Hour-45-Minute Emotional Journey
The stage play runs for 3 hours and 45 minutes, featuring a cast of more than 20 performers. Alongside JessC, the production includes Jeffrey Beh, Paul Lee, Tylor Chen, and Terry Lim as Jia Baoyu.
Together, they bring to life the complex emotional world of the Jia family, weaving romance, tragedy, and longing into a continuous theatrical experience.
A Heartbreaking Portrayal of Pure Love
JessC fully immerses herself in the emotional journey of Lin Daiyu, capturing the character’s inner world and her pure, tragic love for Jia Baoyu. Her performance is marked by multiple emotionally charged scenes, where tears flow freely on stage, deeply affecting the audience.
The storyline’s emotional weight leaves viewers torn between sorrow and empathy, with many audience members visibly moved and shedding tears alongside the character.
Immersive Production Design
To enhance the audience experience, the production employs high-quality sound systems, LED visual backdrops, and custom-designed furniture and props. These elements work together to create a visually rich and immersive theatrical environment.
JessC also collaborates musically with Terry Lim, performing the specially composed theme song Heart’s Longing, adding another emotional layer to the production.
Five Years of Dedication and Doubt
Following the premiere, JessC revealed that this is the most challenging stage production of her career, due to its emotionally demanding narrative and intense character work. She also acknowledged the pressure of bringing The Dream of Red Mansions to the Malaysian stage for the first time.
Over its five-year development, the production faced numerous challenges, and JessC admitted that there were moments when she considered stepping away. However, continuous encouragement from the director, theatre team, and fans helped her persevere.
