After five years of planning and development, the stage adaptation of The Dream of Red Mansions has finally premiered in Malaysia, led by JessC as the iconic Lin Daiyu.

Following the debut performance, JessC described the production as the most demanding stage work of her career, citing its emotional complexity and the immense pressure of bringing a literary masterpiece to life for the first time on a Malaysian stage.

A Nearly Four-Hour Cinematic Theatre Experience

Running 3 hours and 45 minutes, the production blends theatrical performance with cinematic storytelling. Featuring a cast of more than 20 actors, the play delivers a sweeping interpretation of the classic narrative.

Alongside JessC, the cast includes:

  • Jeffrey Beh (Music Box)
  • Paul Lee (Meant To Be)
  • Tylor Chen (Moonlight)
  • Terry Lim, selected globally as Jia Baoyu

JessC and Terry Lim also perform the theme song Heart’s Longing, specially composed for the production.

Crafting an Immersive Stage World

To deliver a fully immersive experience, the production utilizes high-quality sound systems, LED visual backdrops, and custom-built props and furniture. The result is a richly layered stage environment that allows audiences to feel transported directly into the world of the Jia household.

Five Years of Perseverance

The journey to bring The Dream of Red Mansions to the stage was not without obstacles. JessC revealed that she had, at one point, considered giving up due to the scale and challenges of the production.

However, continued encouragement from the director, theatre company, and fans ultimately gave her the strength to persevere. Following the premiere, she expressed deep gratitude for the overwhelming support and understanding shown by audiences.

Music with a Mission

A U.S.-based music producer was invited to rearrange the classic Burial of Flowers, while two original songs—Heart’s Longing and Embers Before Dawn—were created specifically for the play.

These tracks will be included in JessC’s latest EP Heart’s Longing, with all proceeds donated to the JessC Cancer Fund, continuing her commitment to supporting cancer patients through art.

Closing Note

With The Dream of Red Mansions, JessC not only takes on a role of immense cultural weight—she pushes her artistic limits to new heights. The production stands as a testament to endurance, passion, and the power of theatre to bridge classical heritage with modern expression.
