As cinemas and theatres reopen, Symphony Theatre (SPAC) launches its first post-lockdown production, Meant To Be—a modern romantic stage play adapted from a classic love novel.
Headlining the production is JessC, who has committed to performing pro bono as the female lead to raise funds for the JessC Cancer Fund, supporting cancer patients.
A Cross-Cultural Director Takes the Lead
The play is directed by Paul Lee, who grew up between the United States and Taiwan and majored in theatre and music performance during his university years. Known for his character-driven acting style, he has trained under renowned mentors in the U.S. and has directed numerous stage productions, short films, and commercials.
In Meant To Be, Paul Lee not only directs but also stars as the male lead. He further contributes creatively by writing and performing the play’s theme song.
A 16-Member Ensemble Cast
Joining JessC and Paul Lee is a strong ensemble cast of 16 performers, including:
- Jeffrey Beh, known for his leading roles in Music Box and The Dream of Red Mansions
- Natalie Chan
- Caleb Cheah
- Alongside Sophia Koa, Lily Lim, and Timothy Chai
Together, the cast brings a layered emotional narrative to life, blending romance, warmth, and introspection.
The Dream of Red Mansions Delayed
Meanwhile, the highly anticipated stage production of The Dream of Red Mansions—which previously completed its casting for Jia Baoyu, played by Terry Lim—has faced delays due to the pandemic.
Rehearsals were postponed, and further setbacks occurred when the male lead sustained an ankle injury during training. According to director Brian Choot, additional recovery time is required before production can resume. The team is now aiming for a year-end premiere, subject to recovery progress.
Closing Note
With Meant To Be, JessC and Symphony Theatre signal not just a return to the stage, but a reaffirmation of purpose—where storytelling, music, and compassion intersect. Even amid delays and challenges, the spirit of performance continues, driven by both artistic passion and a commitment to making a difference.
